Minehead is ready for you – so get ready for Minehead! This glorious seaside town, perched right on the edge of Exmoor National Park, has a little bit of everything – from gorgeous sandy beaches and whistle-stop steam trains, to epic animal encounters and exquisite heritage.
Whether you're staying at Butlin’s or just popping by, there are plenty of things to do in Minehead which will help to make the perfect holiday. Here are 12 of the best.
You can’t blame us for starting with the best! Butlin’s Minehead is all about endless fun for the whole family, and is guaranteed one of the best things to do in Minehead. Whether you’re splashing yourselves silly in our incredible Splash Waterworld; burning energy in our brand new Skypark, the UK’s most epic and exciting playground; or catching an exclusive, eye-popping show at Centre Stage, you’ll talk about your visit for years to come.
Butlin’s Minehead is brimming with thrilling activities, quality restaurants, comfy accommodation, and things to do for families – and even if you’re only around for the day, you can always grab a day pass to cram in as much as you can.
Just a few footsteps away from Butlin’s, Minehead Beach is the ultimate spot to soak up the Somerset sunshine and sea air. With its gorgeous golden sands, Minehead Beach is perfect for family picnics, a spot of sandcastle building, or even a dip on a sunny day.
Not so keen on getting your cozzie on? Perhaps a traditional British paddle instead, or a relaxing stroll along the wide promenade – 99 in hand, of course!
All aboard to track back through time. The West Somerset Railway is the UK’s longest heritage railway, and it's right on Minehead’s doorstep. Board a beautifully restored steam train and chuff your way through 20 miles of glorious countryside, quaint little villages, and dazzling coastal views.
The 80-minute journey from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard is a charming treat for train lovers of all ages, and the perfect way to take in the scenic local landscape.
If you’re a dog lover, let us recommend a pack of four-legged friends who will instantly love you back – no questions asked! Book in at The Golden Retriever Experience for a heart-melting meeting with the most adorable pack of goldies, in a beautiful countryside setting.
Cuddle, play with, and walk these friendly pups for an unforgettable feel-good rush. You’ll definitely need to book ahead, as this unique experience is super popular – because who could resist the chance of a snuggle with these golden boys and girls?
When you’re ready to unwind, head to the peaceful Blenheim Gardens, Minehead’s largest park and the perfect place for a breather. Admire the beautifully-manicured flower beds, relax in the shade of mature trees, or even stop for a game of croquet or bowls.
With a traditional bandstand and regular live music performances during summer, it’s the perfect place for a picnic – or just to chill out for a little while before getting stuck back into the fun.
Ahoy there! Minehead Harbour is still a working fishing port, but offers a charming slice of local maritime history.
Watch the boats come and go, or if you're feeling nautical, take a boat trip along the coast before a spot of crabbing with the kids – you can hire nets, buckets and bait from the fishing tackle shop if you’re in a pinch. There’s also a handful of lovely cafés and ice cream stands, making it a suitable stop for budding sailors of all ages.
Exmoor National Park is right at Minehead’s door. Whether you’re up for a hilly hike, a bike ride (if you’re a Butlin’s guest you can borrow some wheels from our hire shop), or a bit of birdspotting, Exmoor’s diverse landscapes have it all – from rolling moorlands to hidden valleys, as well as plenty of Bronze Age history.
Keep an eye out for Exmoor’s famous wild ponies and red deer as you explore. And don’t miss Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in southern England, where the views are nothing short of incredible!
Step back in time with a visit to the magnificent Dunster Castle, just a short drive from Minehead. This ancient country home, perched upon a hill with dramatic views, dates back to Norman times at least – and has a fascinatingly turbulent history.
Wander through grand rooms, explore the medieval kitchens, and stroll around the stunning terraced gardens filled with Mediterranean and subtropical plants. It’s a unique mix of history, beauty, and botany – ideal for a family day out.
For those who love the great outdoors, the Quantock Hills are a short trip away and offer some of the best walking and cycling paths around.
This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is famous for its rolling hills, deep valleys, and lush woodlands, with sweeping views over the countryside and coastline. It’s a fantastic spot for an active day out, whether you're breaking a sweat with a hike to the top, or enjoying a more sedate ramble through the woods.
Looking for some wild fun? Tropiquaria Zoo is a small but excitement-packed zoo with something for every animal lover. Set in a 1930s art deco former BBC radio transmission station, you’ll find unusual animals from tapirs to tanukis, plus tropical birds and reptiles.
There are hands-on experiences with some of the friendlier beasts – kids will love getting up close to the meerkats and lemurs, while the aquarium and adventure playgrounds keep the fun going all day.
For a bit of action-packed fun, check out Minehead Eye, an indoor skatepark and activity centre right in the heart of town. Whether you're into skateboarding, BMX, or scooters, Minehead Eye has ramps, jumps, and all the space you need to show off your tricks.
But it’s not just for thrill-seekers – the centre also offers indoor climbing, a soft play area for the little ones, and even an art space for those who want to get creative. Perfect for families looking for something a bit different!
Love to stretch your legs? You’re in the right place - Minehead is the starting point for the South West Coast Path, one of Britain’s most stunning walking routes.
The path stretches for hundreds of miles along the stunning coastline, but don't worry, you don't have to tackle the whole thing! A short stroll will give you a taste of its breathtaking beauty. The route towards Porlock Weir offers dramatic cliffs, peaceful woodlands, and plenty of those famous Exmoor views.
